Instructional Offerings - Proficiency Requirements

INTRODUCTION TO CANOE INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION

 

Duration of Course:

  • 8 to 16 hours for the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW)
  • 8 to 16 hours for the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE)

 

General Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Successfully complete IDW and ICE series
  • ACA member ($35 min/yr.)
  • Pay SEIC Registration ($25/yr.)
  • Knowledge of the ACA as an organization, the ACA Policy Manual and Canoesport in general.
  • Fundamentally it is expected that the paddler should become an experienced canoeist in calm water conditions, before presenting themselves for assessment as an instructor candidate at the IC level.

 

Proficiency Standards:

  • Competent on calm and protected waters (Ability to paddle consistently with finesse, efficiency & mental tranquility)
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach and model the basic paddle strokes; Forward w/sit and switch (bent shaft paddles), forward, reverse, sweeps, stern draw, rudder and draw and have an awareness of the sculling draw and high and low braces.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach and model basic rescue techniques: boat over boat, deep water re-entry, with sling, scoop, swimming boat to shore, towing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to teach the following; Safety issues and hazards of canoeing, hypothermia/hyperthermia prevention and treatment, wind, waves and weather, canoe design and construction, safety equipment, etc.
  • Demonstrate the ability to paddle comfortably with grace and style and to perform rescues efficiently in calm water.
  • Demonstrate leadership and group management skills, experience and judgment necessary to be a safe and effective instructor.
  • Interpersonal skills and professionalism

 

Introduction to Canoe Instructor Candidates who successfully complete the Introduction to Canoe Certification will be certified to teach Quick Start and Introduction to Canoe courses.

 

 

ESSENTIALS OF CANOE TOURING CERTIFICATION

 

Duration of Course:

  • 22 hours for the Instructor Development Workshop and Instructor Certification Exam.

 

General Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Successfully complete IDW and ICE series
  • ACA member ($35 min/yr.)
  • Pay SEIC Registration ($25/yr.)
  • Knowledge of the ACA as an organization, the ACA Policy Manual and Canoesport in general.
  • Fundamentally, it is expected that the paddler should be a competent canoeist in flatwater, before presenting themselves for assessment as an instructor candidate at the Essentials of Touring Canoe level.

 

Proficiency Standards:

  • Competent on flatwater(Ability to paddle consistently with finesse, efficiency & mental tranquility and not just survive).
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach and model the following strokes; Forward with bent shaft paddles (sit and switch), forward with J and C corrections, cross forward, back, sweeps – forward and reverse, stern draw, stern pry, static draw, static cross draw, bow draw, cross bow draw , draw to hip, cross draw to hip, pushaway, pry, rudder.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach and model basic rescue techniques: boat over boat, deep water re-entry, with sling, scoop, swimming boat to shore, towing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to teach the following; Safety issues and hazards (wind, waves, weather, current, rocks, bridges, dams, strainers) related to canoeing, hypothermia/hyperthermia prevention and treatment, etc.
  • Demonstrate leadership and group management skills, experience and judgment necessary to be a safe and effective instructor.
  • Interpersonal skills and professionalism.

 

Essentials of Canoe Touring Instructor Candidates who successfully complete the ACA Essentials of Canoe Touring Instructor Certification will be certified to teach Quick Start, Introduction to Canoe and Essentials of Canoe Touring classes.

 

 

FREESTYLE CANOE INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION

 

Duration of Course:

  • 24 hours for the Instructor Development Workshop (IDW)
  • 16 hours for the Instructor Certification Exam (ICE)

 

General Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Successfully complete IDW and ICE series
  • ACA member ($35 min/yr.)
  • Pay SEIC Registration ($25/yr.)
  • Knowledge of the ACA as an organization, the ACA Policy Manual and Canoesport in general.
  • Fundamentally it is expected that the paddler should become an experienced canoeist on flatwater, before presenting themselves for assessment as an instructor candidate at the Freestyle level.

 

Proficiency Standards:

 

  • Competent on flatwater(Ability to paddle consistently with finesse, efficiency & mental tranquility in all four quadrants; forward, reverse, cross forward and cross reverse).
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach and model the following strokes; Forward with bent shaft paddles (sit and switch), forward with J and C corrections, cross forward, pitch stroke, back with reverse J correction, sweeps – forward and reverse, stern draw, stern pry, static draw, static cross draw, static pry, static cross pry, bow draw, cross bow draw, draw to hip, cross draw to hip, pushaway, pry, rudder, compound reverse stroke, etc.
  • Ability to teach and model the following freestyle maneuvers in all four quadrants: Freespin, Christie, Axle, Post, Wedge, Gimbal and Sideslips.
  • Demonstrate the ability to teach and model basic rescue techniques: boat over boat, deep water re-entry, with sling, scoop, swimming boat to shore, towing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to teach the following:
    • Weather conditions important to the paddler
    • Hypothermia/hyperthermia prevention and treatment
    • Canoe and paddle design and equipment
    • Canoe towing techniques
    • Wind, weather and waves
    • Group formation and communication
    • Safety issues and hazards (i.e. wind, waves, weather, current, rocks, bridges, dams, strainers)
  • Demonstrate leadership and group management skills, experience and judgment necessary to be a safe and effective instructor.
  • Interpersonal skills and professionalism.

 

Freestyle Canoe Instructor Candidates who successfully complete the ACA Freestyle Canoe Instructor Certification will be certified to teach Quick Start, Introduction to Canoe , Essentials of Touring Canoe and Freestyle Canoe classes.
